Writing for Journal Publication (GCTLT)

This is an elective course within the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching Level 7 (GCTLT).

April 29 to October 31
This course provides participants with a scholarly writing framework and support strategies to enable them to transform aspects of their practice and/or research into publishable journal articles.

Offered by Maxine Alterio as a series of workshops, self directed and on-line learning.

Digital Photography (DSLR/Advanced Compacts) July

This course is aimed specifically at people who have been using their digital cameras, know how to operate them and would like to try out some of the more advanced features in a practical manner. The course is split into two streams:
  • specifically for those with Digital SLR Cameras.
  • For people with suitable compact or bridge camers

Please check beforehand that you have enrolled for the correct course. This course may include: Close-up, portraits, food photography, night shots, movement, landscape, field trips or class orientated themes as the need arises.

Refresher Course Te Tiriti o Waitangi

This workshop is for those who have previously completed a Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshop but need to re-explore their knowledge in a refresher course. This one-day workshop will enable participants to review contemporary issues and their relevance including to participants' workplaces.

Assessing Competency US4098 (June)

This two-day workshop is suitable for people who use competency based assessment tools,
whether in a work setting or a training room. It will suit both tutors and those wishing to become
registered workplace assessors. There are two follow-on assessment tasks to be carried out to
show skill in preparing for assessment, carrying it out and attending to the follow-up
administration. Ongoing access to the workshop tutor is included.

Introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (July)

The purpose of this workshop is to provide an environment for people to explore the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications in a non-confrontational, participatory process. This learning framework enables participants to understand the historical context of the Treaty as well as the contemporary debate and its relevance.

Come and learn about social media! (Blogs, wikis, podcasts). Drop in on Tuesday evenings at "The Common Room" - George Street Community Learning Centre. (Cnr of Bath St)

· Making sense of social media, what is it and how can I use it?
· How to blog. Develop an online presence, network with others, and create your own website in under 10 minutes!
· Getting fancy with Youtube, podcasting, Flickr photos and online slide presentations!
· Wikis! They're quick and a great way to learn new stuff.

Invitation to present at the April Staff Development conference

STAFF DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
ENHANCING LEARNING AND TEACHING
Tuesday and Wednesday
21st & 22nd April
The full range of topics for the conference is yet to be determined, however, there will be four streams:

1. sustainability;
2. teaching and learning,
3. effective use of technology;
4. self-care.

Program being developed below...

If you are able to contribute to one of these streams, we would be most appreciative. Please use the submission form to send in information about your presentation and return it to Catherine Lindsay: catherinel@tekotago.ac.nz by 27 March 2009.
The Conference will run from 8.30 to 4.30 approximately each day. There will be sessions such as:
1. Presentations (50 minutes);
2. Workshops ( half day - 2-3 hrs), full day (6 hrs);
3. Swap Shop Discussions.
4. Other - your suggestions welcome.

Invited speakers and panels are also being organised for the first day. You can expect there to be something of interest for everyone. This SD Conference will also encompass the following on-site events:

Learner Centred Learning (March)

Learner Centred Learning (Level 7 – 10 credits) is a core course within the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching Level 7 (GCTLT).

March 31 to June 26
Adult learning approaches are examined along with the creation of learner centred environments that foster active, interactive and deep learning strategies enabling students to achieve successful learning outcomes in a variety of contexts.

This is offered as a combination of 6 workshops and on-line learning.

Digital Photography (Beginners)

A practical course in digital photography tailored for people who have recently bought a digital camera, or have one that they are unsure of using properly and would like to improve their skills.

This course will cover: Digital camera basics, photographic basics, care of your camera, downloading images, practical shooting at every session, printers and printing, shooting techniques, accessories, use of the internet for digital photography, hints and tips and a variety of additional knowledge depending on class needs.

Beginners Photoshop (April)

This course is aimed at people who wish to learn basic Photoshop skills. There is no photographic content, other than using photos within the programmes. Pictures/photos for manipulation will be supplied during the course and the opportunity of working with your own images is also included. It is advantageous for students to have access to their own computers for off-site assignments and practice.

The course will use Adobe Photoshop as the main image manipulation programme.

This course will cover: Basic setup of the program; filing, workspaces, basic photo adjustments, Layers, Enhancements and Special effects.

April Staff Development Days

Bronwyn is coordinating the organisation of the April Staff Development days. A lot of people have put their hands up to help and we have five working groups.

A couple of decisions to be made:
1. the name for the event - fill out poll.
2. panel following the keynote - fill out poll.

Working Groups
1. Presenters - organise sessions - topics and presenters, keynote, timetabling, information from presenters - abstract of session, reviewing & editing abstracts, objectives, technical and practical equipment requirements.
2. Publicity - brochures, email notices, information for staff, ODT .
3. Technical - data projectors, computers, smart boards, etc, - recording of sessions - audio / video, photos, room booking - location for keynote, breakout rooms, numbers.
4. Website - look and feel, content upkeep (OP website)
5. Administration - ordering equipment, photocopying, printing, expressions of interest, catering - practical equipment for sessions - WB markers, butcher paper, vivid pens etc.

It is a tight timeline, hence the organisation on the wiki.

Wānaka (now cancelled)

This course aims to provide a guided and well supported overnight Wānaka for learners.
At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • participate appropriately in an overnight Wānaka
  • be familiar with powhiri and mihiwhakatau and mihihaere and the regional differences of these
  • participate in a mihimihi
  • experience and contribute appropriately to shared living (whakawhanaukataka)

Te Reo and Tikaka Maori for the Workplace (Level 4)

Te Reo and Tikaka Māori for the Workplace (Level 4)

Participants will have a good understanding of Te Reo me ōnā tikaka as it relates to use at work. Participants will gain a clear understanding of tikaka and kawa relevant to the workplace. While use and practice of Kai Tahu and tikaka will be used there will be discussion of the regional and dialectal differences.

There will be one face-to-face session per week (already started, enquiries still welcome)
